One of the oldest and largest areas of protected land in Switzerland, the Swiss National Park covers an area of over 170 square kilometers (1.83 square feet) and is truly stunning to behold. Walking along the earthen trails of this remarkable landscape, it is easy to imagine that you are viewing the same landscape 5,000 years ago. There are over 80 kilometers (49.70 miles) of well marked trails that run through the national park, making a walk the perfect way to explore the four habitats found here, which include high alpine habitats, alpine meadows and forests, and Pass dal Fuorn forests. The park, which was founded in 1914, is home to many species of flora and fauna, including ibex, bearded vultures, wolves, brown bears, and lynx. The spring is a particularly good time to visit the park, as all of the wildflowers, including lady's slippers and alpine clematis, burst into bloom.
