Schloss, Oberhofen am Thunersee, 3653
Oberhofen Castle looks as if it could belong in a fairy tale, with its idyllic lakeside location, thick stone walls, and majestic turrets and towers. Standing proudly on the shores of Lake Thun, the castle's history is a long and convoluted one. The main keep of the castle is believed to date back to 1200, when the Freiherr von Oberhofen began construction of a castle on this site. In the following years, the castle was given to the von Eschenbach and the building was expanded and a moat added. Since the 13th Century, the castle has belonged to many families and has slowly but steadily gained more turrets and other beautiful architectural details. Today, the castle is an attraction that draws romantics, artists and history lovers to the shimmering waters of Lake Thun. Visitors can tour sections of the castle and view artifacts and exhibits housed in the castle and displayed by the Bern History Museum. While visiting, be sure to set aside some time to enjoy a quiet moment in the peaceful gardens. Opening hours and entrance fees vary for the park, castle and museum.
