A National Historic Site of Canada, Kicking Horse Pass crosses the Continental Divide of the Americas. It it situated on the border of Alberta and British Columbia in the Canadian Rockies. The mountain pass was first explored in 1885 by the Palliser Expedition, and it takes its name from an incident involving expedition member James Hector who was kicked by a horse while touring the area. Kicking Horse Pass is also known for housing the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway, constructed in the 1880s. Today, the railway's highest point, the Spiral Tunnels viewpoint, is a popular place to view trains as they run through the pass.
