The historic Monument Square remains one of the prime attractions of Maine. The town square is flanked by the Portland Public Library and Time and Temperature Building, among other noted buildings. The square's focal point is the Portland Soldiers and Sailors Monument , built between the years 1889 and 1891. The bronze and granite edifice salutes the martyrs of Portland, as well as the brave soldiers and navy men of United States naval and military establishments who laid down their lives during the civil war.
