Thuringia's Nordhausen is a city steeped in history. Situated on the banks of Zorge river, its first mention dates back to 927 and it served as one of the prime cities of the central region of Germany in the Middle Ages. In the 13th Century, it became a Free Imperial city and came under the reign of the Holy Roman Empire. In the bygone era, it was the hub of tobacco manufacturing industry and still remains popular for NordhäuserDoppelkorn (distilled libation). Nordhausen Holy Cross Cathedral and St. Mary's Church, among other historical sights, are popular structures of architectural significance. Harz Narrow Gauge Railways, known for ferrying thousands of tourists visiting the Harz mountains, originate at Nordhausen.
