Lake Berryessa extends over 20,000 acres (8094 hectares), surrounded by lush green vineyards and the rugged hills of Napa Valley. Historically, the soil on its shore was the richest in Napa County and used for agriculture but, today, marinas, boat rental agencies and a seaplane landing zone also dot the land surrounding the lake. Formed as a reservoir of Monticello Dam, Berryessa is Napa county's largest lake. Fishing, boating, jet-skiing, swimming and kayaking are some of the water activities popular with visitors. The lake shore also has beautiful camping sites and picnic areas, numerous hiking trails, and tranquil spots for observing birds and wildlife.
