The East River is a salt water body that links Upper New York Bay and Long Island Sound. It separates Brooklyn and Queens from Manhattan and Bronx. These boroughs are connected by several subways, tunnels and bridges like Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, Manhattan Bridge, Hell Gate Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge.
