Pilobolus Dance Theater is a contemporary dance company that emerged in 1971 out of a dance class taught by Alison Becker Chase at Dartmouth College. The founding dancers established the basic configuration of four men and two women in 1975, and Pilobolus Dance has since maintained the same standard. The company made its Broadway debut in 1977 to critical acclaim, setting a new standard for what can be achieved with the human body. Known for its strong physical interaction between dancers and contortions of the human form, Pilobolus Dance theater is particularly renowned for its creation of nonhuman forms during silhouetted acts performed behind a translucent screen.
