Kristin Hersh is an alternative rock singer/songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia who is perhaps best known for her work as one of the two lead singers for the critically-acclaimed alt rock band Throwing Muses during the 1980s and 1990s. Although the band would never achieve mainstream success, it joins the pantheon of first generation alternative rock bands that worked to transform the genre into the commercial powerhouse it would later become. As a solo act, Hersh's goal as a musician is to lift the image of women in rock from the "cartoonish stereotypes" often perpetuated by their role in music, and has done much over the course of her career to shift the perceptions of listeners towards a more intelligent view of the women they see and hear in music.
