When a Canadian electronic music producer noticed that his music lacked a crucial element, he scoured the far reaches of The Great White North for that extra ingredient. After being impressed by a female lead singer with a noise rock band, the producer asked her to help add some vocals to his electro-intensive tracks. The collaboration proved fruitful--dubbing itself Crystal Castles--and after the duo released its eponymously-titled debut LP in 2008 the two went on to became darlings of the indie scene. Though it has managed to grow and evolve in many ways since its formative days, Crystal Castles is still largely defined by what brought listeners in as it was still finding its sonic footing: astute production and empowered, yet antagonistic female vocals.
