While no doubt a pop band through-and-through, Guillemots likes to test the waters of some more adventurous fringes of rock music, regularly tapping into psychedelic influences and offbeat production techniques. The UK band was formed in 2004 by its frontman, Birmingham-based musician Fyfe Dangerfield, and quickly expanded to a four-piece soon after. Guillemots first LP, Through the Windowpane, earned a nomination for 2006's Mercury Music Prize, an honorable achievement for a debut album. Its follow-up launched the hit single, "Get Over It," which peaked at #20 on the UK charts. The band is known to incorporate elements of classic Brit-pop, soft balladry and even hints of dance rock in its music, often coupling its radio-friendly sound with strange instrumentation configurations or the inclusion of quirky production tricks, such as manipulated recordings of typewriters and power-tools. Guillemots' aim is broad enough to maintain its successful mainstream appeal, but the trippier elements beneath the surface should also garner interest from fans of eclectic pop rock.
