Baaba Maal is a singer and guitarist from Senegal who has released numerous internationally acclaimed albums of Worldbeat genre since 1989. Devoting himself to learning music since he was a child, Baaba Maal became almost instantaneously famous in his native Africa for his music in the early 1980s. However, Maal was catapulted to international fame in 1989 when he released the universally acclaimed album Djam Leelii with guitarist Mansour Seck, effectively opening up an avenue for the Senegalese musician to promote his music throughout the world. Since then, Baaba Maal continues to lead an extremely successful career as a musician on the international stage, and has been selected by the UN to assist with its youth development initiatives throughout the world.
