Best known as the vocalist and primary songwriter of the alternative rock band Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder is a guitarist and singer/songwriter widely considered to be one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Since Pearl Jam's formation in 1990, Vedder's distinctive baritone vocal style injected an unreplicable grittiness to band's sound that catapulted the group to the forefront of alternative music. Often choosing an acoustic guitar or ukulele as his instrument of choice for his solo material, Vedder's work outside of Pearl Jam was relatively subdued. His first solo effort was the critically acclaimed soundtrack for the 2007 film Into the Wild, which inspired a rootsy, folk sound from Vedder that translated into his 2011 follow-up record, Ukelele Songs. Although he will be largely remembered and revered as a rock vocalist, his solo work and various collaborations are a testament to his multi-faceted musical inclinations.
