Before Canadian-born comedian Martin Short reached the age of 20, his older brother was killed in a car accident, his mother died of cancer and his father died of complications from a stroke. While losses like this might serve to damper an individual's sense of humor, Short managed to persevere and use comedy to find meaning in life. After getting involved in theater, Short began to pursue the stand up circuit and eventually join the Canadian sketch comedy team SCTV, that had a televised show. After being noticed and singled out for his characteristic style of wacky humor, Short would go on to move to Saturday Night Live and then onto an arguably successful career as a mainstream actor actor, with films like Three Amigos, Father of the Bride and Captain Ron. Later day achievements include his own show on Comedy Central were Short played a fictional Hollywood gossip columnist named Jiminy Glick.
