Shortly after moving to New York kin 1973, Phil Woods created his jazz ensemble The Phil Woods Quintet. Since its beginnings, the band has been defined by its ability to play with a sensitive force, playing on the talents of all the musicians and never relying on Woods alto saxophone. The group has all the essentials and more for a great jazz ensemble, including a bass, piano, drums, a trumpet, an alto saxophone and the occasional flugelhorn. The Phil Woods Quintet's mastery of the jazz genre has been recognized with Grammys for Best instrumental Jazz Performance in 1977, 1983 and 1984. Though the band has added and subtracted multiple musicians, Woods and his original band mates Steve Gilmore and Bill Goodwin continue the band's tradition of pleasing fans with American standards, classic jazz compositions, and original material.
