Nearly everybody has seen the YouTube videos where Chicago kids dance in a style called footwork, characterized by maddeningly fast movement of the legs. The music that soundtracks those incendiary dance battles normally features breakneck rhythms, mean sub-bass, and nonsensical vocal samples. In other words, it is avant-garde at its best. One of the most distinguished proponents of this sound is DJ Rashad, who has been part of the Chicago scene since the 1990s. He has performed all over the world and released albums on cult electronic music labels such as Hyperdub.
