Elisabeth is a Viennese, German language musical that portrays the life and eventual death of Empress Elisabeth of Austra, wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Originally commissioned by the Vienna-based production company Vereinigte Buhnen Wien in 1992, Elisabeth was met with a good deal of popularity and critical laudation. Having since gone on to tour internationally, with productions in Tokyo, Stuttgart, South Korea and Budapest, Elisabeth has grown to be regarded as one of the best German language musicals to have emerged from the 1990s.
