L'elisir d'amore is an opera by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti that takes place in a small village at the end of the 18th century. The opera tells the story of a simple peasant named Nemorino, who falls in love with the wealthy Adina despite her existing engagement to Sergeant Belcore. In an attempt to win Adina's love, Nemorino buys a magic love potion from a traveling doctor. Featuring one of the most heavily performed arias of all time, "Una furtiva lagrima," L'elisir d'amore is a beautiful story of innocence and love, and undisputedly Donizetti's most widely performed work.
