The English experimental band Coil was known for its high adherence to avant-garde tendencies and ability to transcend nearly every genre out there. Formed in 1982 by John Balance and Peter Christopherson, the duo would play together for nearly two years before deciding on the name Coil in 1984. Though the group's music is almost impossible to categorize in any way, both Balance and Christopherson possess an impressive professional work ethic that is blatantly evident in their music. This ability to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly towards their sonic creations resulted in several Coil albums that helped define the industrial music genre. Coil rarely played live, performing less than 100 times before it broke up in 2004, but when the group did hit the stage, auxiliary musicians were brought in to round out the slightly ominous sound the group created.
