Formed by San Francisco songwriter, Mark Kozelek in 1989, Red House Painters was a moody alternative rock group that incorporated aspects of folk, dream pop and slowcore music. Kozelek's songs were often built around stark honesty and fragile emotion, all represented by the slow-burning guitar dirges him and his band mates created. Alongside groups such as Low and American Music Club, Red House Painters brought the slowcore movement to the forefront of independent rock during the early-to-mid 1990s. Upon the group's breakup in 2001, Kozelek took on the name Sun Kil Moon for his continued efforts as a solo artist.
