Medeski, Martin & Wood is an avant-garde jazz trio from Brooklyn that has mastered the balance of working in a collaborative environment while each member contributes his own distinct style. Refined without being overtly polished, the band is composed of three artists who each throws his bag of tricks into a larger melting pot that results in cohesive explorations of jazz. While the band's members crossed paths multiple times throughout 1980s, they first started playing together in 1991 as Medeski, Martin & Wood around the New York City area and quickly gained a reputation as a fearless, eager young group pioneering new styles of play. Best classified as funk-meets-jazz, the band is often regarded as a jam band and has surprisingly collected a large number of dedicated fans from said genre.
