Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina, Whiskeytown was one of the most popular alternative country bands in the 1990s. The group was fronted by Ryan Adams, who has since gone on to enjoy a very successful solo career, and prominently featured violinist Caitlin Cary. Like some of its contemporaries, such as Uncle Tupelo and The Old 97's, Whiskeytown employed a rock, at times even punk, styled approach to the country genre, penning rollicking songs that balanced twang with distortion. Later albums, such as Pneumonia, its 2001 swan song, showcased a more mature and varied side of the band. Since Whiskeytown officially disbanded, Ryan Adams has continued with a solo career that carries on his former group's legacy of using country music as a springboard for exploring a number of different genres.
