Jefferson Airplane was a 1960s rock band that was at the forefront of the American psychedelic music and culture scenes. The San Francisco group, best known for classic songs such as "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," formed in 1965. A product of the Bay Area's burgeoning folk scene, the band's most recognizable lineup consisted of Spencer Dryden (drums), Jack Casady (bass), Jorma Kaukonen (guitar), Paul Kantner (guitar) and the lead vocalist duo of Grace Slick and Marty Balin. Surrealistic Pillow, the band's hugely-successful sophomore LP, embodied the spirit of the 'Summer of Love' with its exploratory psychedelia and the passion of Slick's uniquely recognizable quavering voice. By 1974, Jefferson Airplane's success had started to dry up, leading to a split and the starting of other linked projects such as Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship.
