Cream

Though its success would ultimately wind up being eclipsed by the legendary career of its guitarist Eric Clapton, Cream has still managed to cement itself in rock and roll history as an important and influential band. The trio formed in London in 1966, when Clapton joined up with Jack Bruce (vocals/bass) and Ginger Baker (drums). Having previously worked with The Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Clapton's electric guitar prowess was already well-established within the UK. With Cream however, he was able to explore a wealth of influences ranging from blues, to hard rock and improvisational psychedelia. The virtuosic abilities of all three members allowed Cream to build long-winded and exploratory tracks that showcased efficient songwriting and each members' individual abilities simultaneously. The group's initial run lasted only a brief couple of years but was extremely successful, as songs such as 1968's "Sunshine of Your Love" became worldwide hits. After disbanding, Clapton would go on to enjoy a high-profile solo career, though the trio has reunited at random times to perform together once again.
