When one thinks back on the notable female voices that emerged from the alternative rock scene of the 1990s, few were more hauntingly beautiful than the one belonging to Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star. Alongside guitarist David Roback and other supporting members, the group crafted a combination of jangly rock and slowly unfurling dream pop that is perhaps best exemplified by the 1994 hit single, "Fade Into You." Sandoval's uniquely melancholic voice carries the songs with a wistful, reverb-laden beauty that is tinged with enough hope and pop songwriting chops to prevent it from slipping into dirge territory. Mazzy Star ended its initial run in 1997 but has reunited several times for headlining shows and appearances at huge festivals such as Coachella.
