Robert Miles was a producer and DJ who was born in Switzerland and raised in Italy where his interest in music began with piano lesson. He switched from classical to electronic music and began to DJ at local clubs and private radio stations until 1990, when he used his life's savings to open his own recording studio and pirate radio station. His 1995 release of the house/chill out track "Children," based off of acoustic guitar chords and minimal synthesizer with a piano theme on top, began with slow sales but sold over five million copies by 1997. After parting with his label, Miles founded S:alt Records in 2001 and released Organik, which featured several songs that would be used in movies such as The Bourne Identity and City of Ghosts. He released his jazz and percussion inspired album Miles_Gurtu in 2004 with percussionist Trilok Gurtu, and followed the collaborative effort with his 2011 studio album, Th1rt3een, which features a fusion of ambient music with a mixture of alternative and progressive rock. He succumbed to his battle with cancer on the ninth of May 2017.
