Before European explorers settled and eventually overran the American continents, there were several civilizations scattered around the land that flourished and nurtured art, social graces and humanity. One of these cultures was the Garifuna People, who inhabited Central America along the Caribbean coast. While the decedents of these people have all but assimilated into the Westernized way of living, there are still strongholds of Garifuna culture that exist to this day, reminding the people of their heritage and ancestors' way of life. One musician who's still cranking out some quality music with tinges of Garifuna influence is Aurelio Martinez. His acoustic roots music is extremely popular amongst the people of his home country, Honduras, and even though people who trace their origins to European ancestry don't have a special connection to the music, it doesn't mean that they can't enjoy the extremely dance friendly form of Central American ethnic music.
