Fabio Luisi is a pianist and conductor from Genoa, Italy who has led and played with various ensembles throughout the world since making his debut as a conductor in 1984. He served a five-year tenure as the principal conductor of the Graz Symphony Orchestra, from 1990 to 1995, before moving on to earn the titles of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Tonkünstlerorchester in Vienna. As he made his way from cities like Leipzip, Germany to Zurich, Switzerland, he built his reputation as a preeminent force of symphonic music well into the 21st century. Since 2011, he has led New York City's Metropolitan Opera as Principal Conductor, while also maintaining his role as General Music Director of the Zurich Opera, a position he adopted in 2012.
