Nektar is a progressive rock band originally based in Hamburg, Germany. It was founded in 1969 by guitarist-vocalist Roye Albrighton, keyboardist Allan "Taff" Freeman, bassist Derek "Mo" Moore and drummer Ron Howden, with special effects work by Mick Brockett and Keith Walters. Despite the latter two not being performing members, the band's songwriting was accredited to all six members from the beginning. Its debut album Journey to the Centre of the Eye was of the conceptual kind, comprising one 40-minutes-long song following the journey of an astronaut. Nektar was catapulted into mass recognition after the release of its U.S. album Remember the Future and featured in several Top 20 charts. Dave Nelson was roped in after Albrighton's exit just before the release of Magic is a Child in 1977. Nektar disbanded in 1978 before coming together to release the album Man in the Moon. However, the members went their separate ways again in 1982. Circumstances over the years have led to the existence of two Nektars - one based in Germany and the other in the USA. The German formation releases its work under the name "New Nektar."
