J-Rock band, Luna Sea, was one of the pioneering groups of Japan's "visual kei" movement in the early 90s. Characterized by an extreme attention to image (specifically elaborate makeup, costumes and hair styles), Luna Sea and many other visual kei bands created a more punk rock-influenced version of glam rock, which also incorporated elements of progressive and symphonic rock. Luna Sea's roots go back to a high school friendship between founding members, Shinobu "Inoran" Inoue (guitar) and Jun "J" Onose (bass). The two later added a drummer and a violinist, and began to tour Japan. By the early 2000s, the group began to find some followers internationally thanks to a deal with Universal Distribution. By that point, however, Luna Sea was on a hiatus that would last the better part of a decade. In 2010, the band decided to regroup for a couple of reunion shows and eventually made plans to head out on a world tour.
