Now a fixture of the Chicago music scene, Paul Cary began his career in the early 2000s with an Iowa-based garage rock band. On his 2007 solo debut, Ghost of a Man, Cary showcased his new sound--a scuzzy, lo-fi brand of folk and blues pop that borrows much from the spirit of his garage days. Reverb-soaked guitars and rudimentary drum patterns stomp along underneath Cary's somewhat haunting vocals, which are often filtered through layers of distortion. His solo work has resonated with up-and-coming bands on the garage rock scene, particularly San Francisco's Thee Oh Sees, who recorded a 7" split with him for Stank House Records.
