As a member of the legendary Motown backing band the Funk Brothers Dennis Coffey's legacy is firmly stamped in the history of pop music. Coffey began his career in the 60s as a guitarist for the Royaltones in his home base of Detroit and later branched out to become more of a session musician. When his rock-rooted style caught the eye of Motown Records, the historic label asked Coffey to join the studio backing band for several of the company's artists. With the Funk Brothers, Coffey laid down the guitar parts for many hit songs, including the Tempations' hits, "Just My Imagination," "Cloud Nine" and "Ball of Confusion." Throughout the remainder of the 70s and into the 80s and beyond, Coffey expanded his credentials by beginning to score films and produce albums. He remains active to this day and received some renewed interest in 2010 thanks to an instrumental take on the popular Cee Lo Green single "F**K You."
