The annual Barcelona Marathon has been a local favorite since it first began in 1978. The race has had many ups and downs in its long history - in 2005 it was cancelled out of respect for the passing of the race's founder, Ramon Oliu. The marathon begins and ends at Avinguda María Cristina.
