For the city of Basel, Shrove Tuesday is one of the year's most important events. At around exactly 4am on the Monday before Lent, three of the city's most festive days begin, with the event Morgestraich. All lights go out and the music starts playing. In the exactly 72 hours later, Endstraich, begins, only disguised shapes pass through lanes and streets. Those dressed in costly costumes begin performing in the afternoon, both large and small performance groups that meld into a nearly impenetrable throng. Also weeks after the end of Shrove Tuesday, there can still be found places with smatterings of isolated confetti, calling to mind that unforgettable time in February/March.
