Dirty Three is a three-piece band from Melbourne that came together in 1993 and after its first pub performance. During that fateful set, front man Warren Ellis attached a guitar pickup to his violin with a rubber band to create an unusual distortion effect, capturing the attention of its small audience that quickly spread the world about the new instrumental indie folk band. While Dirty Three primarily creates instrumental post rock with influences from ethnic folk and classical chamber music, the band also sometimes incorporates elements of alternative rock music into its sound with the help of its frequent guest vocalists.
