While all of Estudiantes de La Plata's achievements seem pale in comparison to the likes of Boca Juniors and River Plate, it undoubtedly is one of the Primera División's best teams. Founded in 1905, it is one of the few teams, outside the country's top five, that has won the Primera Division and the Copa Libertadores. Initially regarded as one of the underdogs of the top flight, the team was swift to respond and prove itself by defeating some of the league's top teams. Through its history, it has fielded a number of world class players, with the likes of Juan Sebastian Veron and Pablo Piatti being a part of its alumni.
