For eight days in July each year, the glory days of the Erie Canal are brought to life thanks to this festival sponsored by the twin cities of North Tonawanda and Tonawanda. Some 350,000 come from all over Western New York and beyond to take part in art shows, food tastings, musical tributes, trips along the canal, mime shows and open houses. The event, which began in 1983, ends with a spectacular fireworks display from a barge on the Niagara River. Admission is free.
