When the British group Acoustic Alchemy started making its signature style of contemporary instrumental smooth jazz in the early-1980s, most English audiences were not interested in the unique music the band was making. Though Acoustic Alchemy had moderate achievement during its early years, by playing numerous pubs and small venues, success didn't really come until the Nashville-based label MCA offered to fly the band in from the UK to record a debut album. The LP, Red Dust and Spanish Lace, was released in 1987 as established Acoustic Alchemy as a talented band whose members possessed instrumental skills worthy of accolades. Since the release of its first album, the group has grown into one of the more popular non-traditional jazz outfits of its generation.
