Hadestown: The Myth. The Musical, based on the album Hadestown by Anaïs Mitchell, is an adaptation of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Set in a post-apocalyptic world and narrated by the Greek god Hermes, the story follows Orpheus' journey to the underworld to bring back Eurydice. The musical was first performed in Vermont from 2006 to 2007. It made its Off-Broadway debut at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2016. Upon its debut, the production, as well as the delivery of the artists, received unanimous critical acclaim. Its simplicity was especially appreciated. The musical made its UK debut at the Olivier Theatre of the National Theatre, London and has also been performed at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Canada. It premiered on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York. The production has been the recipient of awards such as the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award.
