The Denver Pioneers are the sports teams that compete on behalf of the University of Denver in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. With sports teams playing for the school since 1867--originally known as the "Ministers" or "Fighting Parsons," odes to the university's Methodist heritage--the Pioneers moniker was chosen in 1925 after a student voted nickname contest was held. Though primarily known for its dominance in winter sports with distinguished ski and hockey teams, the University of Denver also plays host to well performing golf and lacrosse teams.
