With a loyal and ever-expanding base of fans, one of the largest free music events in North America is held each Labor Day weekend. It started in 1980, as an outgrowth of Detroit's summer weekend ethnic festivals, and for many years it was known as the Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival. National and internationally known jazz and blues stars perform in various settings throughout the Motor City; besides Hart Plaza, there is Campus Martius Park and the Ambassador Ballroom of the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. In all, there are more than 100 free shows during the weekend, including new and emerging acts, making it one of the most vibrant scenes in the Midwest.
