Dusseldorf's largest festival takes place over a period of nine days at the end of July. Originally conceived to celebrate St. Apollinaris, the city's patron saint's day, the festival now attracts some four million visitors with a host of amusements including a circus and fairground rides. As ever, there is plenty to eat and drink, including local specialties like Reibekuchen (potato fritters) and Backfisch (fried fish). The highlight of the festival is the huge fireworks display on the Rhine. Visitor are advised to take public transport which runs until the early hours.
