Asturias Day

Every year on the first Sunday in August, attention turns to the port city of Gijón. The reason for this is the Asturias Day celebrations. Gijón is popular for its festivals and carnivals, but this event is the most important one on its calendar - decorated floats, processions and people dancing to traditional music are all part of the festivities. Everyone then gathers at the race course to have one big picnic. By custom, it is mandatory for the mayor of the town to be present for the event, and play an active role in the celebrations.
