Held first in 1938, Charro Days is a celebration of the friendship between Brownsville and its sister city in Mexico located just across the river, Matamoros. The festival opens with a "Grito," a joyful shout, and provides fun and entertainment when it finally ends, days later. There are specific celebrations within Charro Days including Mr. Amigo, a public figure who transcends the celebrations, and the street party Sombrero Fest with a jalapeno-eating contest and food booths, among other things. A fun time for all! Admission to some events are free.
