Kansas City citizens usher in the spirit of Yuletide with this symbolical event, held in the evening, at the beginning of the festive season. A program of music precedes the actual event, wherein the Kansas City Symphony Chorus serenades the crowds that unfailingly turn up every year. The highlight of the event is the 100 foot tall Mayor's Christmas Tree, decorated with 7,200 white lights which are ceremoniously lit by the flipping of the switch. More than 47,000 white lights bedeck the Crown Center Square, and the whole venue is instantaneously illuminated, drawing gasps of delight from kids and adults alike. The mayor of Kansas flips the switch, and proceeds to enjoy an evening of camaraderie and Christmas fellowship with his people. A celebrity guest is usually invited for the event.
