Cameron Carpenter is an American organist who may be single-handedly responsible for sparking a a revival of interest in an instrument that had almost faded into obscurity. However, in order for such interest to be attained, controversy is often required, and Carpenter is as polarizing a figure in the world of classical music as he is controversial. The amount of artistic license and showmanship Carpenter applies to his interpretations and arrangements of works has led many conservative connoisseurs of the organ repertoire to criticize his performances as being too overtly flamboyant. However, others find his interpretations to be refreshingly exciting and youthful, given the rather solemn associations people have typically made with the instrument and its music.
