Although India gained independence from the British in 1947, it wasn't until January 26, 1950 that the Indian Constitution came into being. Now known as Republic Day, it is one of the main national holidays and all the states celebrate it with equal gusto. Parades held throughout the country are usually followed by the unfurling of the Tricolor and the singing of the National Anthem. Bravery awards and patriotic-themed programs are also often part of the celebrations.
