The ninth month of the Islamic calendar Ramadan is an important religious period for Muslims worldwide. During this month they observe a period of strict fasting where neither food nor water is consumed between dawn and dusk. With the onset of the night however a veritable feast is laid out for the fasting individuals and the whole city comes alive to partake of delicacies available both on the streets and in restaurants. Ramadan ends with the arrival of the new moon on the last day of fasting and heralds a day of celebration called Eid al-Fitr.
