West Ham United comes from London’s East End and it is one of the oldest clubs in English football. Established in 1895, the team was initially called Thames Ironworks, then the name changed to West Ham United in 1905. The new name of 'Ham' has nothing to do with deli meat, yet it probably is a shortened form of 'Hammers', as the club is also known. The club entered the Football League in 1923 and though it has been relegated to the lower divisions several times, West Ham has always found a way back into the top-tier. Despite the club’s success on the pitch, it has never finished better than third place. The club’s most notable rivals are Chelsea and Tottenham and the club traditionally takes the pitch at the famed Boleyn Court in Upton Park, however in 2016, West Ham shifted base to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
