A brainchild of Michael Arden, Once On This Island is a refreshing narration of a fearless and amicable peasant girl living in Haiti, the jewel of the Antilles. With a brave heart and an indelible spirit, she traces and traverses myriad places, to unite one and all, using the power of love bestowed upon her. Perhaps one of the driving forces of the play are the four mighty gods; Erzulie, Asaka, Papa Ge and Agwe), each of who comes with a distinct power, carving a vivid consequence for the girl, and in turn, determining the fate of the play. The play highlights the existing class distinctions and stresses the need for love, hope and inclusion, amid a beautiful, tropical wonderland.
